More About Michael Fagin and
West Coast Weather, LLC
Enjoying mountaineering and the outdoors in general, Michael had a keen interest in finding a better way to avoid bad weather. He started reading books on weather forecasting, reviewing the weather maps every day, and attending presentations on the topic by the field’s experts. Forecasting weather almost became an obsession of Michael’s.
At first, weather forecasting was a fun weekend hobby. Soon though, his reputation as a guy who could forecast the weather started to build. He was becoming the ‘go to’ guy for climbers and hikers in the Washington state area. Michael continued to learn as well, attending upper level courses at the University of Washington.
Before long, Michael decided to leave his long career in marketing and officially go into the weather business full time. He opened up shop in the year 2000 and since then, his client base has grown nicely. Whereas the weather modelers rely on super computers, Michael’s equipment is pretty straightforward. Regular computers and standard software applications like Excel are all that’s needed… that and a high speed Internet connection.
When not forecasting the weather for climbers on the world’s highest mountains, Michael serves other clients. Projects range from projecting the amount of rainfall from 8pm to 11pm in the city of Seattle so the city’s engineering team can determine whether suitable conditions will be present to test the storm water system to snow forecasting for area’s school district. Vineyards represent another client, the owners wanting to keep a close eye on their crop by monitoring frost conditions.
One of Michael’s favorite requests: trying to forecast the weather for a couple’s wedding date one year away! In this case, Michael warned of a high likelihood of inaccuracy, but he did feel confident in his forecast of a happy marriage!
As for a dream Michael has, he shared, “I think it would be great to forecast Everest weather from the base camp itself… just being there and seeing the actual weather on the mountain first hand… that would have to help… and make more forecasts even more accurate.”
